Axel Diaz: A Success Story

Opengate takes pride in providing a supportive workplace where staff members are empowered, educated, and inspired to succeed. We are continuously seeking candidates looking to grow their skillset and advance their careers while enhancing the quality of life for the people we support, and a shining example is Axel Diaz.

Three years ago, Axel was working as a supervisor at a nearby gas station, and an Opengate staff member told him about our open positions. Axel anticipated applying for a job as a driver, but there was no such position. Nadra Grandison, Residential Coordinator of Operations, interviewed Axel and explained the role of Direct Support Professional (DSP) to Axel, as well as the potential for growth at Opengate.

Although Axel did not have prior experience supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, he displayed a willingness and desire to learn, a characteristic that has allowed him to flourish.

Senior Director of Program Services Terrance Harris says about Axel, "The mere thought of someone transitioning from working at a gas station to something as delicate as supporting people with disabilities in itself says a lot about the person. We took a chance on Axel and are so pleased we did because he has successfully worked his way up the ranks. "

In the three years Axel has been with Opengate, he has advanced from his original DSP position to Lead Counselor, Assistant House Manager, and Manager of Gray House. He is currently a Manager of both Gray House and the ICF Day Program.

Axel participated in the first group of Opengate's Leadership Development Program. Staff members recognized him as a rising leader and prepared him to advance to other levels within the agency. Axel relates, "The most valuable lesson I've taken away from this training is that to lead others successfully, you must learn to lead yourself effectively. Having empathy is crucial to leading others. The importance of emotional intelligence and delegation."

With his positive attitude and pleasant disposition, Axel remains engaged with the individuals and their families, creating an atmosphere where individuals feel happy and supported. Axel celebrates their successes and helps them through difficult times.

Axel Diaz is motivated and enjoys his job, and despite its challenges, finds his position rewarding and fun. His inspiration includes acquiring new skills, learning new things, overcoming challenges, leading and coaching a team to success, and working well as part of a team.

Axel’s favorite memory of his time with Opengate thus far is a community outing for individuals to the Statue of Liberty. It was a special moment for him to see them excited, having a good time, and everyone smiling!
